Computer Graphics & Visual Computing (CGVC) 2018

13th - 14th September 2018

Swansea University, United Kingdom

CGVC 2018, hosted by Swansea University in the UK, is the 36th annual computer graphics, visualization, and visual computing gathering organized by the Eurographics UK Chapter. CGVC has been a Eurographics supported event Since 1983 when the first instance took place 28-29 March 1983 at York University.

The exciting and vibrant field of visual computing is an increasingly important research area due to its wide range of applications in many disciplines. In general, our ability to collect, store, and archive data vastly exceeds our ability derive useful knowledge and insight from it. This is a ubiquitous problem. Visual computing plays a key role in gaining an understanding large, complex data sets or phenomena by exploiting the human visual system. Visual computing leverages computer graphics in order to provide a visual overview, explore, analyze, and present phenomena which is often very difficult to understand.

The objective of CGVC is to foster greater exchange between visual computing researchers and practitioners, and to draw more researchers and industry partners in the UK, Europe, and abroad to enter this rapidly growing area of research. CGVC has an expanded scope to include all areas of visual computing, and a steadily more wide-spread visibility that achieves a more wide-spread impact.

Best Paper:

"RiverState: A Visual Metaphor Representing Millions of Time-Oriented State Transitions" by Richard C. Roberts, Dylan Rees, Robert S. Laramee, Paul Brookes , and Gary A. Smith

Best Student Paper:

"Smith Keys-to-Sim: Transferring Hand-Crafted Key-framed Animations to Simulated Figures using Wide Band Stochastic Trajectory Optimization" by Dominik Borer, Martin Guay and Robert W. Sumner

Best Short Paper:

"Image Inpainting for High-Resolution Textures using CNN Texture Synthesis" by P. Laube, M. Grunwald, M. O. Franz and G. Umlauf

Best Poster Paper:

"Improving Quality of Anti-Aliasing in Virtual Reality" by K. Maruszczyk, G. Denes and R. K. Mantiuk

CGVC papers are published in the Eurographics Digital Library of the Eurographics Association, using an expert review process.

New to CGVC 2018

Selected papers from CGVC 2018 will be invited for submission to a special issue of the Computers journal. The normal publishing fee will be waived. See the following URL for more details:

Full and Short Paper Acceptance

Full and Short papers will feature two acceptance categories: accept for oral presentation and accept as poster presentation. This way, more presenters will have the opportunity to showcase their work.

Viewpoint Papers

For the first time in 2018, CGVC also features a viewpoint paper track (also known as position paper) which enables researchers a new possibility to publish their ideas. Viewpoints articles offer detailed technical opinions on trends in visual computing or reports on how visual computing has contributed to the comprehension of data or phenomena. We encourage discussions of challenges or limitations in today's methods and areas of potential new topics of research. We are also interested in application discussions that focus on the physical, life or social sciences, engineering, or commerce, for example, or related to the process of visual computing in general. We encourage an emphasis on lessons learned from practical experience for application discussions, particularly where visual computing has been employed in a real, working environment. Viewpoint papers are submitted with author names and affiliations.

Welsh Cakes

We hope to serve delicious Welsh cakes. Freshly baked Welsh cakes have an addictive quality to them.

CGVC takes place in the Wales only once approximately every ten years, so take advantage of this great opportunity. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact the Conference Chair, Robert S Laramee, (+44) 01792 602 609 or r.s.laramee "at" We are especially interested in potential Sponsors of the event.
